Heat Pump Guide (EN)

Heat pumps: error codes, servicing and costs — explained in plain English.

What makes up the heat pump installation cost — what must be in the quote (2026)

Updated: 2026-10-02 · ~2 min read

Status: October 2, 2026. Indicative market prices (Central Europe, EUR); compare quotes line by line.

Typical investment breakdown (house ~120 m², pump 8–16 kW)

ItemTypical range (EUR, indicative)What to know
The unit itself (pump + factory controls)€7,000–14,000brand/model/kW is the biggest cost factor; compare SCOP, not just price
Installation work + piping (PE-X, insulation, mounting/foundation)€3,000–8,000depends on pipe runs, access, outdoor-unit foundation
DHW buffer (e.g. 300 L) + connection€400–1,500check whether the buffer is included — often it is not
Automation: valves, circulation pumps, room controls€500–2,000costs rise with floor heating / two circuits
Electrical work (dedicated circuit, protection)€300–1,000pumps often need a dedicated circuit; check panel capacity
Extras: hybrid controller, remote monitoring, PV integration€1,000–4,000demand an exact description of what the extra covers

Total, typically €12,000–24,000 for a well-insulated ~120 m² house (Central Europe). The investment pays back through lower bills, not through the purchase price — see the seasonal-cost article.

How to compare two quotes (checklist)

  1. Same brand/model/kW? If not, comparison is meaningless.
  2. What does “installation” include: piping, DHW buffer, automation, test run, commissioning and training?
  3. Warranty: on the unit (manufacturer) vs. on the installed system (installer) — separately, how many years each.
  4. Whether the quote accounts for grants/subsidies (national programs) and who processes them.
  5. A quote with only a “price per kW” and no line items — reject it; you cannot compare.

Red flags in a quote

  • No brand, model or capacity in the documentation.
  • “Installation included” without an item list (buffer? piping? commissioning?).
  • Warranty on the unit only, no installer warranty on the installation.
  • A clearly below-market price — check what was left out (often buffer and automation).
