Heat Pump Annual Service: What It Includes, What It Costs & When the First Service Is Due (2026)

Updated: 2026-10-01 · ~2 min read

Status: October 1, 2026. Whether service is mandatory depends on your warranty and installer contract — check both; figures are indicative Central-European market ranges.

Is annual service mandatory?

  • In most cases: no. Manufacturer warranties usually do not require periodic service (especially on newer models) — but some models/installer contracts do. Read your warranty and the installation agreement.
  • Even when it's optional: one inspection per heating season is good hygiene — it's cheaper to catch a small issue in May than to diagnose a fault mid-January with the house cold.

What a typical annual inspection covers

ItemWhat the tech doesWhy it matters
Filters (magnetic on return, mesh)clean/replaceclogged filter = flow alarm + circulation pump overload — a very common recurring fault
Water-side pressuretop up to nominal, check expansion vessel behaviorpressure drop = micro-leak or air (see pressure drop guide)
Refrigerant circuit (F-gas)condensing/evaporating pressures, leak test with detectorrefrigerant leak = COP loss + top-up cost; requires F-gas certification
Fans / outdoor coil (evaporator in heating mode)clean, check insect guard, fan operationdirty coil = airflow/pressure fault + COP drop
Circulation pump & electricalconnections, capacitors, control logicfailed circulation pump is a frequent "won't start" cause
Sensors (outdoor, return, flow)verify readings vs. real temperaturessensor drift = wrong controller decisions (defrost timing, output)

When is the first service due?

  • New system: after the first full heating season (spring) — by then you can see whether the loop was bled properly, pressure stayed stable, and real COP matches the declared range.
  • Warranty-required service: usually in the first 1–2 years, per the warranty/installation contract.

What it costs (indicative, Central Europe, 2026)

ItemIndicative range
Visit + inspection (incl. water top-up/bleeding)€150–400 labor + materials if needed
Filters (magnetic, mesh) set€15–80
Refrigerant top-up after a leak — separate item€150–400+ depending on charge size and labor; F-gas-certified work only

Prepare before the visit (makes it shorter and cheaper)

  • Error history from the controller: code(s) + when they appeared.
  • Access to the unit (is it in a recessed niche that needs disassembly? outdoor reachability in winter).
  • Known nominal pressure value of your system (manual/plate).
